Frontgate releases 2005 Email Security Report
(PRWEB) January 5, 2006 -- Frontgate Technology Services, a leading provider of email security solutions to enterprises, service providers, and government organizations, reported that spam accounted for 68.8% percent of all messaging traffic received during 2005, down approximately eight percent from 2004. “Predictions that the spam problem would be solved seem premature,” said Nat Earp, Frontgate Technology Services’ founder and CEO. “Advances in filter technology is keeping more spam from reaching users Inboxes, but spam is still a significant problem for most corporations.”
2005: Directory Harvest Attacks Increasing
Frontgate also reported that Directory Harvest Attacks increased in 2005. Frontgate’s threat detection systems identified and blocked 7.8 million directory harvest attempts in 2005, up 12% percent from 2004. This year saw a rise in directory Harvest attempts coming from zombie PCs that have been compromised and are remotely controlled by covert software. “Directory Harvest Attacks are increasing and becoming better coordinated,” said Earp. “Directory Harvest Attacks are the least visible, most under-reported threat to corporate email systems today.”
2005: Phishing Attacks Increasing
As expected, Phishing attacks increased in frequency and sophistication in 2005. Phishing attacks increased approximately 15% percent over the same time period in 2004. “Phishing attacks have advanced to a point where most end-users cannot distinguish them from legitimate messages,” remarked Earp. “Fraud and identity theft has become a serious problem for corporations and end-users alike.” Phishing attacks will continue to increase in 2006, increasing the need for user education and improved authentication methods.
